Subject: !!! URGENT EMERGENCY MEDICAL NEWS!!!!
On Friday May 13, 2011, the Colorado State Veterinarian’s Office announced that two confirmed case of EVH 1 were discovered in horses that had attended the Western National Cutting Show in Ogden, Utah. One of these horse has already been euthanized due to severe nneurological distress. Neither case has been confirmed by the Utah State Veterinarian’s Office as the State Veterinarian’s Office will not complete its testing until Monday,May 16th. However, as a result the Utah Quarter Horse Association has cancelled there weekend show.

EVH 1 is a serious disease which can cause horses to become ataxic (incoordination), inability to empty bladder, and weakness of the tail. Some horses will become completely paralyzed; the prognosis for these horses is poor. In a small number of cases, horses can
show abnormal mentation and develop cranial nerve signs. Most horses become mildly to moderately neurologic and
stabilize rapidly. EHV-1 is most commonly transmitted by horse to horse contact but can be spread through the air or by contact with contaminated surfaces (hands, clothing, etc.)

At this time Dr. Sam Hendrix, of the Utah Horse Council is recommending that you keep your horses away from the Golden Spike Events Center until at least Monday when we should have more information from the Utah State Veterinarian. If you have recently attended an event at the Golden Spike please pay close attention to your horses. If your horse shows any signs of abnormality (typical initial signs are a fever which willl cause a horse to go off feed) please DO NOT TRAVEL and contact your local veterinarian IMMEDIATELY!

St. George PBR

Hey everyone! I’ve had an amazing spring traveling both in and out of the state.  I thought this might be a simple way to keep you all updated on my travels.  This post begins with my most recent trip at the PBR West.  I also added photos to the gallery, there are lots you may have missed to don’t forget to check there!

While I was in Saint George last weekend for the PBR West event, I decided to stop in Zion National Park to take a look around.  It was a great day trip, and it was funny to see all the tourists expecting to see a lot of neat rock formations instead get a good long stare at the Miss Rodeo Utah truck.  Thank you Larry H. Miller for making my detour an even more memorable expericence!  I also have to note that when I called my mom to tell her I would be stopping in Zion she immedately asked if I had a map and whether I would be able to find my way around….. Someday I will get where I’m going with out getting lost, but until then, I guess her reaction is fair.

Upon arriving at the PBR West event I got to spend most of my week with the Dixie Round Up Royalty.  I am super excited to see these great girls working so hard to be representatives of PRCA rodeos, and I’m even more excited to see more southern Utah girls working towards becoming future Miss Rodeo Utahs.

Our current Dixie Round Up Princess could give any state title holder a run for her money when it comes to knowing rodeo.  Our “Rodeo Queen Clinic” turned into a Q&A trying to stump her!  She showed off her knowledge again that night. She left the crowd with one common conculsion: We were standing with a future Rodeo Announcer, or Miss Rodeo America.

The Cowboy Mounted Shooters were probably the most entertaining group on the fair grounds all week.  The Dixie Round Up Queen, Stephanie and I were both invited to try our hand at their game of shooting balloon targets with a pistol.  The tricky part is we were also riding a horse and being timed.  I have to say it was a blast, and much harder than I thought it would be!

Over all I had a great experience in St. George. The bull riding, carinival, and vendors, all made for great memories; however the new friendships I made and the old friendships that were renewed are definitely the best part of any trip… as always.

God Bless,

Marti
